Hero MotoCorp, the world's largest two-wheeler maker by volumes, has inaugurated its new R&D centre in Jaipur, Rajasthan. Called 'Global Centre of Innovation and Technology' (CIT), it would make the company capable of producing new bikes and scooters independently.
Built with an investment of Rs 850 crores, the CIT will function as Hero's critical technology development centre and help the company maintain its stranglehold over the Indian market, where it enjoys over 45 per cent market share.
Pawan Munjal, CMD of Hero MotoCorp, said on the occasion: "It's a huge commitment from us in terms of investment that allows independent development of future technology and new products. We have been proactively working on improving our existing line-up, which is our clear focus and would gradually work on niche products like higher powered bikes beyond the 200-250cc segment."
Hero has been primarily using its erstwhile partner Honda's technology in its products and had been paying huge royalty for its use. The two partners broke up in 2010 and the royalty payments were stopped after June 2014. The sprawling new facility that houses the best global technologies in product design & development, testing and validation would allow Hero MotoCorp to forge new products, both for India and global markets. It has a 16-km long world-class test-track within the campus that has 45 different surfaces to simulate real world road conditions, both Indian and global.
The facility has 500 automotive resarchers and engineers with 12 expats in charge of key operations at the CIT. The company has already successfully launched two scooters - Maestro Edge & Duet - the first products designed and developed by Hero's in-house R&D team.
