CPI for industrial workers eases to 5.06% in June

Retail inflation for industrial workers eased to 5.06 per cent in June this year from 8.59 per cent in the same month last year, mainly due to lower prices of certain food items. Year-on-year inflation based on all-items stood at 5.06 per cent for June, 2020 as compared to 5.10 per cent for the previous month.

The All-India CPI-IW for June, 2020 increased by 2 points and stood at 332. On 1-month percentage change, it increased by (+) 0.61 per cent in June, 2020 compared to (+) 0.64 per cent increase between corresponding months of previous year.

Food inflation stood at 5.49 per cent in June against 5.88 per cent of the previous month and 5.47 per cent during the corresponding month a year ago. The maximum upward pressure in current index came from Food group contributing (+) 1.65 percentage points to the total change.

Consumer Price Index Numbers (Pan, Supari, Tobacco and Intoxicants) increased to 3.86 % on Y-O-Y basis. Higher consumption of these products led to increase in inflation. CPI for Pan, Supari, Tobacco and Intoxicants had record an increase of 3.73% in June 2019.

Retail inflation for industrial workers in the 'Fuel and light' segment came in higher at 7.22% Y-O-Y in June 2020, as against 6.50% Y-O-Y in May 2020, reflecting the impact of the recent fuel prices hikes. The inflation was 3.3 % in June 2019.

Retail Inflation in Housing segment related to industrial workers has remained muted at 6.89% for last six months. The prices for housing have not changed for industrial workers in previous months.

Inflation in the clothing & footwear group reduced to 1.78% as compared to 2.23% the previous month. In previous two months the inflation remained muted at constant change.
