Freight traffic on Indian Railways (IR) rose by 8.7 per cent y-o-y in December 2020. Indian Railways carried 118.3 million tonnes of freight during the month as compared to 108.9 million tonnes carried in December 2019.

In December 2020, Railways' freight loading was 118.13 mt, which included 50.67 mt of coal. Freight of coal declined by 4.2 per cent on yearly basis in December 2020.

During the time, Indian Railways earned Rs. 11788.11 crore from freight loading. Freight earning from Pig Iron and finished steel increased by 22.2 per cent in the month of December 2020

In December 2020, the Railways' freight loading was 15.31 mt of iron ore which is increased by 11.8 per cent on y-o-y basis.

In December 2020, the Railways loaded 7.46 mt of cement. Freight earning through cement inclined by 19 per cent in December as compared to December 2019.

In December 2020, the Railways' loaded 6.13 mt of food grains. Food grains traffic earnings increased by 80.8 per cent in December 2020 on y-o-y basis.

The Railways also said that "that a number of concessions/discounts are also being given to make Railways Freight movement attractive. Revenue earnings through POL products are highest in the month of December since March.
