Wimbledon organisers have increased the Wimbledon Prize Money for this year; a look:

Wimbledon 2018 got another increase in prize money fund taking the total to massive $45.5 million. The 2018 men and women's singles champions will take home $2.96 million each. The winners in the men and women's doubles will pocket $591,707 each (per pair), while the mixed doubles champions will take home $144,639.

Wimbledon will not be the most lucrative grand slam in the year as Great Britain Pound has been hit hard since Brexit. US Open is likely to stay highest paying tennis grand slam for third year in a row.

Australian Open prize money rose by 10 per cent this year to $41.50 million, while French Open gave out $45.10 million for 2018. The US Open has not announced its prize money yet.

Last year, the US Open topped all tournaments with $50.4 million as prize money. The French Open was second at $48 million, followed by Australian Open and lastly, the Wimbledon.

Like any other sports, tennis too suffered from a gender pay gap. Wimbledon finally bridged the gap in 2007. In 1968, the prize money for the Gentlemen's singles champion was $2,629.81 while the Ladies' singles champion made only $986. In 2018, champions for both singles categories will take home 2.25 million or roughly $2.9 million.

The first edition of the tournament was held at the All England Croquet and Lawn Tennis Club in Wimbledon London in 1877. This featured 22 male players, and according to newspaper reports, the winner took home 12 and 12 shillings along with a silver cup worth 26 and 5 shillings. Women became a part of the tournament in 1884.

One of the oldest grand slam in the world, Wimbledon Championship has been played professionally since 1968 and it has recorded prize money history. Back in 1986, the total prize money pool for Wimbledon championship was as little as 26,150 where the winners of singles men's and women event took home 2,000 each while runners up got a mere 800 for singles event.
