Small-cap stocks have attracted strong mutual fund inflows in 2026, but is the rally making valuations too expensive? Sameer Dalal, President, Natverlal & Sons Stockbrokers, says investors must look beyond the broader small-cap trend and focus on individual companies, valuations and sustainable earnings growth. The biggest risk is liquidity: if investor sentiment turns and small-cap funds begin selling, finding buyers for expensive, less-liquid stocks could become difficult. Some stocks could face sharp falls, particularly if larger competitors cut prices or growth disappoints. The expert remains cautious about the idea that small caps and mid caps will automatically outperform large caps. The suggested approach is diversification: allocate 50 - 60% to large caps, 20 - 30% to mid caps and the remainder to small caps, based on individual risk appetite.
