Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has called for a balanced regulatory framework that encourages innovation in artificial intelligence (AI) while ensuring its responsible use. Speaking at the release of a NITI Aayog report, she stressed that regulations must not “wipe out technology itself,” but instead guide AI’s growth in a way that benefits society. Sitharaman highlighted that AI is evolving rapidly in real time, making it essential to remain vigilant about ethical and social challenges. She noted the risks associated with job disruption and the potential misuse of AI, warning that irresponsible deployment could have serious repercussions. The Finance Minister underlined India’s preference for soft-touch regulation, aimed at enabling innovation without stifling progress.
