The Subadhra Yojana, a direct benefit transfer scheme for women in Odisha, is set to be the first government sponsored scheme to offer payments in Digital Rupee or the Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC). Beneficiaries have been given the option of receiving the funds, up to Rs 10,000 every year, in ‘digital rupee’. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who launched the scheme on September 17, said the transfers are linked to RBI’s digital currency pilot and assured the beneficiaries that the money could be spent anywhere. As per reports, the CBDC pilot project being run by RBI has around 60 lakh users including around 55 lakh retail users.
