Cable Bridge In Gujarat's Morbi Collapsed Just Days After Renovation

The suspension bridge on the Machchhu river in Gujarat's Morbi collapsed on Sunday evening, killing at least 133 people. The CCTV footage showed that people shook the bridge and it came crashing down. The British-era bridge reopened for the public just four days back after remaining shut for renovation work for seven months. The state information department said that five teams of NDRF, six platoons of SDRF, a team of Air Force, two columns of Army, and two teams of Indian Navy apart from local rescue teams were involved in the operation that continued through the night. PM Modi expressed his condolences and announced ex-gratia of Rs. 2lakh to the kin of the deceased and Rs. 50,000 to the injured from PM relief funds. After the incident took place, Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel rushed to Morbi to personally monitor the rescue operations and medical services. He also announced ex-gratia of Rs 4 lakh to the kin of the deceased and Rs 50,000 financial help to those injured in the accident.
