European Commissioner for Trade Maroš Šefčovič has admitted that agriculture remains a sensitive issue in the ongoing India–EU Free Trade Agreement (FTA) negotiations. Speaking on the sidelines of discussions, Šefčovič revealed that both sides decided to set aside the agriculture chapter for now in order to make progress in other areas. He noted that the chapter has not been closed yet, as both India and the EU must consider their domestic “audiences” before taking final decisions. While India–EU trade talks have advanced on several fronts, agriculture continues to be a key sticking point. A fair and balanced resolution will be critical to sealing this landmark FTA.
