In a significant address during the Lok Sabha session on February 4, 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted the remarkable changes in income tax policies that have benefitted the middle class over the past decade. He emphasized that before 2014, the income tax rebate was limited to ₹2 lakhs, but now it has been increased to ₹12 lakhs. This pivotal change is part of the government's broader efforts to alleviate financial burdens on citizens and encourage savings. Modi pointed out that his administration has effectively addressed the loopholes left by previous governments, stating, "Only a bandage was needed, and we did that as well." He further announced that with an additional standard deduction of ₹75,000, citizens will no longer need to pay taxes on incomes up to ₹12.75 lakhs starting April 1. This move is aimed at fostering economic growth and enhancing the quality of life for millions of Indians.
