The Narendra Modi government introduced the Waqf Amendment Bill in the Lok Sabha on Thursday, sparking a fierce debate. Opposition parties denounced the bill as an attack on the Constitution, claiming it undermined minority rights by diminishing the powers of the Waqf Board. Congress leader K.C. Venugopal and AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi were vocal in their criticism. A heated exchange took place between Union Home Minister Amit Shah and SP leader Akhilesh Yadav. Despite opposition, BJP allies JDU and TDP backed the bill, with JDU leader Lalan Singh defending its intent to introduce transparency and prevent autocratic behavior. Union Minister for Minority Affairs Kiren Rijiju passionately urged support for the bill, emphasizing its benefits for weaker sections of the community. In response to the uproar, the government referred the bill to the standing committee for review. The proposed Unified Waqf Management, Empowerment, Efficiency, and Development Act aims to modernize Waqf property registration through a central portal, regulate the Waqf Board's powers, and ensure representation of women and marginalized Muslim groups. The bill also allows Waqf Board decisions to be challenged in the High Court, aiming to enhance transparency and reduce forgery in Waqf land designation.
