In a candid conversation with news agency ANI, Telecom Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia conceded that it was not possible to completely pull the plug on spam and scam phone calls. “Every new technology brings possibilities of people using it in nefarious or incorrect ways,” said the minister, adding, “we have tried to stop it however we can and warn people about it. Even the Prime Minister has mentioned it in his speeches.” Scindia however said that the government’s efforts to minimise the damage has led to stopping 10 lakh people falling victim to frauds of Rs 4,000 cr in the past year. Other numbers he cited are 2.75 lakh mobile numbers being disabled, 10,000 senders being blacklisted and 25-30 crore calls being blocked by high-tech filters in the past two months.
