Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the Union Cabinet, under the leadership of Narendra Modi, has approved a major reform in the power sector to further strengthen India’s power grid. He highlighted that India already has one of the world’s most robust grids, backed by heavy investments over the past decade, and more than 50% of the country’s power generation capacity now comes from clean and renewable energy—an achievement reached five years ahead of the 2030 target. To support future power demand and renewable integration, the Cabinet increased Power Grid Corporation’s equity contribution limit from ₹5,000 crore to ₹7,500 crore, enabling it to participate in more projects and strengthen grid infrastructure. The Cabinet also revised and increased the Minimum Support Price (MSP) of jute to ₹5,925 per quintal, a hike of ₹125, along with decisions to promote high-yield and better-quality jute seed varieties. These steps will benefit jute farmers, especially in West Bengal and Assam, while maintaining MSP at over 50% above the cost of production.
