Union Minister Nitin Gadkari outlined key challenges and solutions in biomass use and alternative fuels during a lecture on sustainable innovation. He highlighted high logistics costs in converting cotton straw into bales, stressing that research must meet four criteria- proven technology, economic viability, raw material availability and marketability. Gadkari also flagged limitations of electric and CNG tractors, pushing for a shift toward biofuels and hydrogen-powered equipment. He detailed progress on flex engines using ethanol and isobutanol, noting global examples and India’s advances. Gadkari said alternative fuels can cut costs, reduce imports and drive greener agriculture and construction, though policy and taxation hurdles still need resolution.
