The Supreme Court has asked the Centre to consider grounding airlines that fail to comply with directions on airfare regulation. The observation came during a hearing on a plea seeking tighter controls on airfares and additional passenger charges, especially during festivals and holiday periods. India Today’s Aneesha Mathur explained that the court has been following the issue for nearly a year and has questioned the lack of strict action against airlines. The Centre told the court that it has fast-tracked new airfare rules and expects to finalise them within three weeks. Draft rules have been submitted in a sealed cover. The matter will be heard on September 7.
