In a conversation with Gaurav Sawant, India Today at the Andaman Ideas Summit 2026, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju strongly defended the Great Nicobar Island Project, rejecting allegations that it prioritizes development over environmental protection. Responding to criticism raised by Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, Rijiju argued that India's environmental laws are robust and that strategic national projects should not be stalled by what he called misinformation and politically motivated opposition. He highlighted the importance of the blue economy, deep ocean exploration, tourism, and national security in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Rijiju also accused sections of the opposition and activist groups of repeatedly obstructing infrastructure and development projects critical to India's long-term growth and strategic interests.
