The Delhi-Meerut Expressway has quietly introduced a new speed-limit system. Instead of following one fixed limit throughout the day, vehicles will now face different maximum speeds depending on the time and traffic conditions.

Pilot Project
The new system was introduced as a pilot project from August 15. The idea is to make speed limits more responsive to actual road conditions, rather than keeping the same restriction in place regardless of traffic movement.

Time Matters
The speed limit now changes through the day. From 12 midnight to 7 am, cars can travel at a maximum of 65 kmph, while heavy vehicles are restricted to 50 kmph during this period.

Peak Hours
During the morning rush from 7 am to 5 pm, the maximum speed for cars has been set at 55 kmph, while heavy vehicles can travel at up to 45 kmph. The limits are designed around traffic conditions at different times.

Digital Watch
Digital speed-limit display boards have been installed along the expressway to show motorists the applicable limit. Sensors placed on the road are also collecting traffic and vehicle-speed data, with the system expected to be reassessed after about three months.
