Lok Adalat on September 12: Can your traffic challan be waived? Here's what to know

The National Lok Adalat will be held on September 12, 2026. It will provide an opportunity to settle pending and pre-litigation cases, including certain traffic-related matters, through a faster and potentially less costly process.

Challan relief

Vehicle owners dealing with traffic challans may get an opportunity to seek relief through the Lok Adalat. However, not every challan is automatically waived. The possibility of settlement or reduction depends on the nature of the offence and applicable local rules.

Minor offences

Cases involving offences such as riding without a helmet, not wearing a seat belt, jumping traffic signals, improper parking and other compoundable traffic violations may be considered for settlement. However, relief is not guaranteed and each case is dealt with on its merits.

Serious offences

Not every traffic violation can be settled through the Lok Adalat. Serious and non-compoundable offences fall outside its scope, meaning cases such as drunk driving and hit-and-run cannot simply be treated as routine challans eligible for waiver.

Those planning to approach the Lok Adalat should carry the challan copy, vehicle registration documents, driving licence and a valid identity document. It is also advisable to check with the local Legal Services Authority beforehand whether the challan is listed or eligible for settlement.
