No more toll barriers? Delhi's 9 busy entry points are set for a major change

Driving into Delhi through some of its busiest highway gateways could soon mean no stopping at a boom barrier. MCD plans to introduce multi lane free flow tolling at nine entry points by October end, allowing vehicles to keep moving while toll payments are processed electronically.

Nine gateways

The first phase targets nine high traffic entry points, including DND Flyway, Rajokri, Kundli, Badarpur and Ghazipur. These corridors routinely handle huge volumes of vehicles entering Delhi, making the rollout potentially significant for commuters who lose time crawling through toll queues.

Clearance catch

There is one big hurdle before the barriers disappear. MCD officials say installation can begin only after NHAI issues a no objection certificate. A joint survey of the nine locations has already taken place, but the pending clearance leaves the ambitious October end deadline under pressure.

₹200 crore

Barrier free does not mean toll free. Contractor Sahakar Global is expected to spend nearly ₹200 crore installing gantries and other infrastructure, while MCD expects about ₹964 crore in annual revenue from the wider toll contract covering all 154 plazas under its jurisdiction.

Ghazipur test

Ghazipur, on the Delhi Meerut Expressway, could be among the hardest locations to transform. The toll point already absorbs heavy traffic from Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand, and officials say installing new equipment without worsening congestion will be a difficult engineering and traffic management exercise.
