₹3.25 lakh crore Rafale deal: France’s India plan changes the fighter jet game

The proposed Rafale deal comes at a crucial moment for the Indian Air Force, which is battling declining fighter squadron strength. As older MiG aircraft retire and newer indigenous platforms face delays, the additional Rafales could become a major boost to India’s combat readiness.

The Rafale deal is not only about aircraft numbers but also about how much Indian technology enters the fighter. Officials are expected to closely examine integration of indigenous systems like Astra beyond-visual-range missiles and the level of local content offered by France.

A massive manufacturing opportunity could emerge beyond Dassault Aviation, with Indian companies such as Tata, Larsen & Toubro and other defence firms expected to participate. The programme could create business opportunities worth around ₹1.6 lakh crore, giving a major push to India’s private defence sector.

Fleet Explosion

India’s Rafale fleet could see a dramatic expansion if the proposed acquisition gets approved. With the Air Force and Navy already ordering 62 Rafales, the new deal could take India’s total Rafale strength to 176 aircraft, with future Navy plans potentially pushing the number beyond 200.
