Indian agriculture is no longer defined by primitive subsistence farming. Indeed, farmers are climbing up the value chain and are gradually shifting from subsistence to cash and commercial crops. Production of cotton, spices, rubber and coffee has risen sharply since 1990/91. India is now fast emerging as a major exporter of these crops.
