Sulphur dioxide is the biggest villain of the air pollution menace. Each year several thousand tonnes of sulphur powder is burnt in fireworks. SO2 along with PM results in smog which is harmful to the human body. It is corrosive to the respiratory tract and can cause asthma in the long term. Additionally, it causes acid rain which affects water sources, vegetation and buildings

This is used in noise-making crackers. Exposure to it in the air can cause eye and skin irritation. It gives rise to toxic dust and can prove to be carcinogenic too.

At high concentrations perchlorate can affect the thyroid gland by inhibiting the uptake of iodine. An oxidizing agent, it can also cause lung cancer. The cadmium compounds damage the lungs and lead to gastrointestinal problems. It also contaminates ground and surface water.
