Starting April 2022, certain electric vehicle (EV) manufacturers saw their subsidies blocked by the Ministry of Heavy Industries due to allegations of non-compliance with localisation norms. As a result, the EV industry has been attempting to reclaim unpaid subsidies, with the Society of Manufacturers of Electric Vehicles (SMEV) estimating that the amount owed is Rs 1,400 crore over the past 15 months. Sohinder Gill, CEO of Hero Electric and DG of SMEV, noted that the largest market players in 2019-2021 have been hit the hardest by the lack of supply chain and the impact of Covid in 2020 and 2021. Business Today TV's Associate Editor, Chetan Bhutani, interviewed Gill to discuss the issue of EV subsidies.
