India just made a major legal shift with the Jan Vishwas Bill 2026. Earlier, even small mistakes like paperwork errors or missed deadlines could lead to criminal cases. This new bill changes that by removing criminal penalties for minor offences and replacing them with warnings and civil penalties. The bill covers 79 laws, across 23 ministries, and amends 784 provisions, with over 700 provisions being decriminalised. It introduces a more practical and fair system where first-time mistakes get warnings, penalties are proportionate, and cases are resolved faster without overloading courts.
