In the run up to Diwali, all preshipment checks on fast moving items like mobile phones, memory cards, personal care appliances, kitchen appliances, air conditioners, televisions, home theater systems, printers etc. has already been done, so that packets can be dispatched within minutes of the order being received, Snapdeal said in a statement.

To ensure fast deliveries across the country, nearly 20,000 tonnes of cargo will move by air, for which bulk bookings have been done by Snapdeal's logistics partners.

Amazon, which is investing heavily to surpass Flipkart's in gross merchandise value and has been fast closing the gap in recent months does not want to be left behind in the ``Diwali dhamaka.''

It plans to surge ahead with not only the best prices, but also faster shipping and with having people sign up for Prime in which the US firm is offering same day, one-day and two day deliveries to customers even during the festive season sale, a time when order volumes being handled each day could be higher than what e-tailers usually handle in a month.

Snapdeal's chief customer experience officer Jayant Sood said,"Snapdeal's fast deliveries have set new benchmarks for all players. From same day delivery within metros, to next day delivery to more than 100 cities, Snapdeal boxes will be on the move across the country, making the "Unbox" moment a special one for our users this festive season."

While all the fulfillment centres will work 24X7, the deliveries too will start earlier at 8am and will continue till 8pm to cater to the increase in volumes, he added. Cash-rich US giant Amazon will also host its annual five-day festive sale called The Great Indian Festival, a day ahead of rivals Flipkart and Snapdeal as it looks to outpace the competition with bigger discounts, faster delivery times and zerointerest EMIs.

Retailers clock the highest sales during the Diwali week, with close to half their earnings coming during in the October-December holiday quarter.

E-commerce players Flipkart, Snapdeal and Amazon expect sales during the five-day period to be twice their average sales in an entire month.

Flipkart on its part has its major focus bringing new shoppers online. By growing the market, claiming to have hit 100 million registered users earlier this month, Flipkart is confident that it can stave off the challenge from Amazon. The festive season sales could be among the most important for e-commerce platforms as it could reverse the slump in online buying that has set in this year. According to research firm RedSeer, sales on e-commerce marketplaces fell by 19 per cent in the Jan-Mar quarter and fell by a further 5-10 per cent in the Apr-Jun quarter.

Apart from hefty discounts Flipkart and Snapdeal are also looking at making it much easier for customers to afford large ticket purchases. Flipkart plans to use its no-cost EMI offer to bag as many smartphone, TV and households appliance customers as possible while Snapdeal expects to cash in on attractive exchange offers.
