The Bharat Bandh call given by 10 trade unions evoked mixed response across the country. While Kerala was the worst hit by the strike, life in Bihar, Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra and Telangana was partially affected.

Mostly public sector banks remained closed across the country in favour of the strike call given by 10 trade unions. We take a look at the major events during the strike.

  • In Visakhapatnam, police took over 100 agitators into preventive custody, where the strike evoked a good response in the industrial areas of Gajuwaka and Auto nagar. Operations were hit in PSUs such as Visakhapatnam Steel Plant, Bharat Heavy Plate and Vessels, Hindustan Shipyard, NTPC's Simhadri Power Plant, Visakhapatnam Port Trust and private industrial units in Visakhapatnam as many of the workers joined the strike.
  • In Kerala, about 6,000 employees of the VSSC in Thumba, ISRO Inertial Systems unit, a research and development unit of ISRO at Vattiyoorkavu, Liquid Propulsion systems centre (LPSC) and Indian Institute of Space Science Engineering college at Valliamala were arrested, sources said.
  • Around 300 workers were arrested in Rajmahal and Chitra mines areas of Jharkhand. There have been instances of arrests in West Bengal and Haryana.
  • In Andhra Pradesh's Eluru, the private jute mill was completely shut down as over 5,000 workers went on a mass leave.
  • Clearing operations at Reserve Bank of India were affected with union leaders claiming that cheques totalling Rs 19,000 crore were held up as the staff did not report on duty.
