Union finance minister Arun Jaitley on Monday chose to keep everyone guessing on whether Reserve Bank of India (RBI) governor Raghuram Rajan would get a second term after his current three-year stint comes to an end in September. Asked whether Rajan would get an extension, Jaitley quipped, "These are not issues which we discuss through the media."
Jaitley added, "As far as the finance ministry and RBI are concerned, there is an institutional relationship between the two. It is a very mature relationship. We at the highest level at the two institutions have discussion and each other views are considered between us."
Rajan, on his part, had indicated his interest in a second term on May 13 when he said he has "enjoyed every moment of the job, but there is more to do". Senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader Subramanian Swamy last week had suggested that Rajan should be removed and accused him of being responsible for unemployment and collapse of industrial activity.
