Tesla registered 990 cars in India from 1 January to 26 October 2026, according to Vahan data in a report on TradingView. Add the 227 from 2025, and it has about 1,217 registrations since launch. That's small for the world's best-known EV brand. But most of this year's total came after one decision: a much lower Model Y price.

Tesla cut the Model Y Premium RWD by ₹9 lakh to ₹50.89 lakh ex-showroom, which puts the earlier price at about ₹59.89 lakh. Autocar Professional places the cut in late June, while Autocar India says May. Either way, the sales change is clear. The five-seater has a claimed WLTP range of 500 km.

Registrations were 38 in June, then 116 in July, 117 in August and a record 291 in September, Autocar Professional reports. October had reached 220 by the 26th, with days of the festive month still left. The months from July to September alone made up 524 of this year's registrations, against 246 in the first half.

In September, Tesla's 291 cars beat Mercedes-Benz's 125 electric cars. BMW led the luxury EV segment with 502 units and a 51% share. Tesla's share of that segment rose to 30% from 11% a year earlier, and it moved to No. 2. Its rivals on price now include the Hyundai Ioniq 5, Kia EV6 and BYD Sealion 7.

Tesla held just 0.8% of India's electric passenger vehicle market in September. For scale, Tata registered 14,669 electric cars in October alone, according to AutoPunditz. That one month is nearly 15 times Tesla's total for 2026 so far. Tesla's story here is about the luxury segment, not the mass market.

Tesla India reported revenue of ₹247.31 crore and a net profit of ₹5.16 crore in FY26, its first financial year of vehicle sales in India, Free Press Journal said, citing Moneycontrol's report on filings. Parent companies put in about ₹86 crore of equity that year, lifting capital to about ₹136 crore. These figures predate most of the current sales rise.

The final October number will show if September was a peak or a new base. Tesla's line-up also includes the Model Y L Premium AWD, a six-seater priced about ₹11.1 lakh above the RWD. That implies roughly ₹62 lakh. Tesla's presence covers seven cities. Festive offers and deliveries may lift October, so a few months' data will mean more than one.
