Which car sold the most in India in August 2026? The complete top 10 ranking reveals several close contests

The Punch led the August ranking with 21,320 units, up approximately 99% from 10,704 in August 2025. Tata launched the updated Punch in January at an introductory ₹5.59 lakh; its official consumer page later displayed a higher starting price, so ₹5.59 lakh should not be labelled the permanent current price.

The WagonR recorded 20,180 units, approximately 39% above the 14,552 reported a year earlier. It finished 1,140 units behind the Punch. Maruti nevertheless dominated the overall top 10, placing six models in the ranking.

The Swift reached 19,832 units, approximately 60% more than the 12,385 reported in August 2025. Only 348 units separated it from the second-place WagonR, making the gap between the two leading Maruti hatchbacks much smaller than their year-on-year growth rates.

The Fronx posted 18,730 units, approximately 51% above 12,422 a year earlier. It trailed the Swift by 1,102 units and led a tightly grouped cluster of four models—the Fronx, Ertiga, Nexon and Dzire—separated by only 312 units.

The Ertiga registered 18,516 units, only 71 more than the 18,445 reported in August 2025—growth of about 0.4%. Its fifth-place finish came just 85 units ahead of the Tata Nexon, showing how little separated the middle of the ranking.

The Nexon recorded 18,431 units, approximately 32% above the 14,004 reported a year earlier. It missed fifth place by 85 units but stayed 13 units ahead of the Dzire—the narrowest adjacent gap anywhere in the August top 10.

The Dzire’s 18,418 units were approximately 12% above the 16,509 reported in August 2025. It was the only sedan in this top-10 list and finished just 13 units behind the Nexon and 98 behind the Ertiga.

The Creta recorded 16,288 units, about 2% more than the 15,924 reported a year earlier. It was Hyundai’s sole representative in the top 10 and sat 2,130 units behind the seventh-place Dzire.

The Baleno reached 15,746 units, approximately 25% above the 12,549 reported for August 2025. Its inclusion gave Maruti five of the first nine positions before the company’s sixth model in the top 10 was counted.

The Scorpio range rounded out the list with 15,576 units, approximately 58% above the 9,840 reported a year earlier. It finished 170 units behind the Baleno. Industry model tables commonly combine Scorpio Classic and Scorpio-N under the Scorpio name, which should be stated in the caption.
