Meta's 'technical glitch' removes PM Modi post from Facebook; Officials likely to be summoned

A video shared on Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Facebook account was removed on July 28, 2026, by Meta. The video was published on July 23 and addressed Generation Z during a 36-day student protest organised by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP). Meta has now acknowledged the removal of the video and claimed that it was an “error” and says that it has been restored.

Meta Spokesperson told Business Today that "The content was removed in error and has since been restored."

Sources said Meta has also apologised for the removal of the 3-minute video post, claiming that it was a technical glitch.  “It was removed due to a technical glitch,” sources said; however, the government is taking it very seriously, and officials including Meta and Instagram will likely be summoned. 

In the video, PM Modi said, "stricter action against paper leaks will be announced at tomorrow's Cabinet meeting," and it gained millions of views over 4 days. However, the video post was removed by Meta, and Facebook indicated that access had been restricted because of what looked like a legal or government request, and not because the content violated Facebook's rules.

The incident raised eyebrows among BJP officials. BJP's Tajinder Bagga also shared a X post saying, "Facebook has crossed every limit. It has blocked Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s post on strict action against paper leaks from being seen in India." "Who gave this foreign platform the authority to censor India’s Prime Minister and decide what Indians are allowed to read?" he added. It has also brought attention to accurate content moderation by social media platforms, particularly when handling official government communications. 

PM Modi is one of the most followed politicians across social media platforms. PM Modi crossed 105 million followers on Instagram. He has gained 4 million new followers within just one week, taking his follower count from 101 million to 105 million.
