In a recent address at the U.S.-India Business Council (USIBC), U.S. Ambassador to India Eric Garcetti emphasized the need to reduce tariffs between the United States and India to foster stronger trade ties and create a more equitable partnership. His remarks come amid heightened trade tensions, following statements by US President-elect Donald Trump about imposing reciprocal tariffs on India if high taxes on American goods persist. “We need, together, to lower tariffs, not to see them go up. We need, together, to increase trade and to make it more fair and equal,” Garcetti urged, advocating for a collaborative approach to international trade. Garcetti also highlighted the importance of addressing key issues such as workforce development and talent exchange. “We need to, together, make sure that there's training and talent that meets the needs of companies on both sides of the Indo-Pacific,” he added. This statement comes after President-elect Trump’s declaration of a tougher trade stance, promising a tit-for-tat approach: “If they tax us, we tax them the same amount.”
