Building a diversified financial services empire in India is no easy feat, especially for first-generation entrepreneurs and that , too, in financial services sector where the public sector banks and private brands like HDFC and ICICI Bank dominated the scene. Uday Kotak, who started with bill discounting in the mid-80s, transformed his company from a small player into the Kotak Mahindra Group, a financial behemoth. In nearly four decades, the Group has amassed significant assets, loans, and market capitalization, employing over a lakh of individuals. It boasts a diverse presence across various financial segments, including banking, insurance, and wealth management. Kotak , who stepped down in September last year, is a lifetime Achievement Award winner in BT-KPMG Best Bank survey. BT's Editor Sourav Majumdar and Managing Editor Anand Adhikari caught up with him at his family office at BKC to talk about the bank he built, banking sector challenges, economy as well as host of other issues confronting the financial system.
