In his inaugural address at the 38th National Games in Dehradun on January 28, Prime Minister Narendra Modi spotlighted a surprising contributor to India's rising obesity rates: excessive cooking oil consumption. He urged households to reduce their cooking oil intake by at least 10%, highlighting the alarming health risks associated with obesity, including diabetes and heart disease. This call to action comes amidst growing concerns over lifestyle disorders exacerbated by junk food and physical inactivity. Interestingly, the Economic Survey for 2023-24 had emphasized the pitfalls of unhealthy eating habits and sedentary lifestyles and said that they not only threaten public health but also hinder India's economic potential. The survey had warned that for the working-age population to remain productive, they must adopt healthier lifestyles, steering away from the toxic mix of screen time and junk food.
