Workers at Samsung’s plant have been protesting for over 30 days, demanding better pay, improved working hours, and formal recognition of their trade union. Tensions escalated when 10 key protest leaders were arrested in a midnight police operation, further aggravating the situation. Workers have alleged police harassment during the protests, claiming authorities are interfering with their right to protest peacefully. Adding to the momentum, several political parties aligned with the ruling DMK, including CPI, CPI-M, VCK, Congress, MDMK, and TVK, have declared their support for the workers. Leaders from these parties were scheduled to join the protests, amplifying the workers' cause. In the midst of the protest, workers also reported that the tent set up for their gathering was removed, which added to their grievances. Despite the ongoing unrest, Industries Minister TRB Raja has stated that Samsung is open to listening to the workers’ demands, but pointed out that the disconnect seems to lie with the local HR team, not with Samsung’s higher management. India Today Pramod Madhav brings in his ground report.
