Confessions of a fund manager

The masters of Dalal Street share their investment strategies, their best moments and worst mistakes, and their advice for small investors with MONEY TODAY.

Past positions: At DSP Merrill Lynch since 1997 but for the period December 2005 till May 2006 when he was CIO, HSBC AMC.

Investment mantra: Uses mix of analysis of broad macro trends that contribute to economic growth and variables affecting corporate performance. Focus on return on capital and earnings growth.

Best calls: Selecting Pantaloon, Matrix and Voltas at the right time.

Worst calls: Not picking HDFC early enough (2000-2003)

Top picks right now: Media and capital goods. From a near-term perspective, non-ferrous metals.

Advice to small investors: Clearly decide on your asset allocation and the equity component within that.To build your equity portfolio, carefully choose a basket of stocks and allow them time to deliver returns.Alternatively, look to invest through a few good equity funds.

Worst mistake small investors make: Focusing on short-term price movements and allowing sentiment to influence investment decisions.

The one thing they must never forget: Diversify your risk, invest with an objective and give your investments time to bear fruit.
