LG Optimus 3D: Makes A Deep Impact

It may not be the first glass-free 3D phone in India but LG's Optimus 3D impresses with its ability to capture 3D content.

LG OPTIMUS 3D
Glass-free 3D handsets aren't new to us-last year Zen Mobileand Spice had launched their glass-free 3D phones. These were basic featurephones with a small 2.4-inch auto-stereoscopic display with very limited 3Dcontent onboard. Earlier this year, LG had hinted at its own powerful 3Dsmartphone. It is now coming to the market. With great specifications- such asa big 3D display, dual cameras for capturing 3D content and a 3D zone loaded onhardware running the Android operating system, LG's Optimus 3D has created aniche of its own.

3D CAPTURE: The biggest attraction of this smartphone isn'tthe glassfree display but its ability to create 3D content. Unlike otherregular phones where only a single camera is put to use, here two 5 MP camerascapture images simultaneously to create 3D pictures. But you can switch between3D and 2D modes. This is true also with still and video capturing. The 3Dimages are captured at a maximum resolution of 3 megapixels, while you get 5 MPresolution in the 2D mode. Simlarly, while 3D videos are captured at 720Presolution, you can film 2D videos at Full HD 1080P resolution. Even at thelower resolution, the 3D content shows amazing depth that leaves you prettyimpressed.

 LG OPTIMUS 3D
Price: Rs 37,000 Specs: 4.3-inch display; Two5 MP cameras; EDGE, 3G, Wi-Fi, a-GPS; 8 GB memory onboard, expandable to 32 GB;168 gm; 1500 mAh battery.

3D CONTENT: Apart from creating 3D content using its dual-cameraset-up, the phone also comes loaded with 3D content. This includes an animatedvideo, Gulliver's Travels, and a few games, including Nova, Asphalt 6 and PlayGolf. The 3D games icon takes you to a web page powered by LG and Gameloft thatgives you access to a few more 3D games, among them titles such as RF 2011,Assassins Creed, Shrek Kart. You can also watch 3D videos directly from YouTubeby hitting the YouTube 3D icon.

GLASS-FREE 3D DISPLAY: The 3D effect is mostly achieved withspecial glasses. But the Optimus 3D has a 4.3-inch stereoscopic touch displaythat makes depth come alive in your eyes without the use of any specialheadgear.

Since the Optimus 3D is esentially a phone, not everything appears in3D mode. But by clicking an icon for 3D Space in the main menu, you can get thephone to automatically switch to 3D mode and provide access to all 3Dapplications available. For every other operation, the phone works in 2D mode.

THE WORKS: As a phone, Optimus 3D has Android v2.2 (Froyo)on board (it is upgradable to Gingerbread). Also, just like the Optimus 2x, ithas a 1GHz dual core processor humming within to boost performance. Gmail iseasily activated and apps can be downloaded from Market. Web browsing ispleasant. But with so much to do, the 1500 mAh battery gets drained quickly, even more so when in 3D mode.

3D ZONE: The 3D Space keeps together all things thirddimensional. This includes 3D games and apps, YouTube 3D, 3D images and 3Dcamera.

The 3D guide comprises folders for creating, viewing and sharing 3Dcontent. For instance, you would be advised on the average distance you shouldkeep between a subject and the camera, etc. Another useful tip: view 2D imagesin the gallery in 3D mode by simply selecting the 3D touch key.

WHY WE FELL FOR IT: Has the best 3D set-up in phones tilldate. The price, however, might deter buyers.

ALSO WATCH OUT FOR: HTC's EVO 3D. Running on Android v2.3,this new offering from HTC has a 4.3-inch glass-free display, is powered by a1.2 Ghz processor and has 1GB of ram. The Evo 3D is priced at Rs 35,990.
