Q: I accidentally washed my pendrive along with my clothes. Is there any way how to get my data back? Harsh Khurana, on email

G&G: Pendrives use flash storage which are not easily get affected by water, unless it has been submerged for a long time. Dry the pen drive thoroughly for at least a couple of days. Don't plug it in before it is completely dry. Do a check disk to see if the file can be recovered. Go to Start menu, open Run and type CMD to bring up a command prompt. Then type Chkdsk XX drive:/r If your pendrive does not register on your computer after plug in, chances are the data has been corrupted. You can try and use software like Recover Data and Pen Drive Data Recovery to recover the files. However, these do not have a 100 per cent recovery record.

Q: I have a PS3, HTC One X and a 320 GB external hard drive without Wi-Fi.
  • Can I stream videos from my phone to the PS3, so that I can watch it on my TV?
  • Can I use a USB cable to transfer data between my PS3 and HTC One X, without using Wi-Fi or a computer?
  • Can I do the same as above for my HTC One X and the HDD?
  • Can I access the files on my HDD from my phone?
Kritin Kapoor , on email

G&G: Here are the responses to your queries:
  • Using DLNA in the PS3 and HTC One X, you can stream videos.
  • We are not sure whether you will be able to transfer data between the two using USB cable. You will have to try it yourself.
  • Even this might not work.
  • No. When we tried to do this, it did not work.

Q: I want to buy a tablet but I am very confused by the wide range of tablets available in the market. I have decided to choose from new iPad,iPad 2 and the Asus eePad Transformer Prime. My requirements are hardcore gaming, net surfing and apps. Please suggest the best tablet.Utkarsh Daurani, on email

G&G: For hardcore gaming, we would recommend you to go for the new iPad. There are a plenty of games available on the App Store that you can download and enjoy. In the case of Asus Transformer Prime, there wasn't a huge variety of games available at the time we reviewed the tablet.

Q: I want to buy an Android phone with 3G, Ice-Cream Sandwich, powerful processors, HD video recording and playback, high resolution camera, Swype function, sensitive touchscreen, big screen and costing around Rs 8,000. What is the best option? R Vee, on email

G&G: What you are asking for is not available in the market. The cheapest ICS Android phones are the HTC One V and Sony Xperia Neo V, both of which cost around Rs 18,000.

Q: I am trying to transfer a song with the .iss extension. This song can be played by VLC Media player or Windows Media Player, but not on standard DVD Player like Sony or Philips. Can such songs be played on an iPod or a tablet? Ranajit Biswas, on email

G&G: Script used by Inno Setup, a free program used to create Windows program installers, contains a series of text commands that specify installation files, target installation locations, and other settings; used to control all aspects of the installation. ISS files store all of the information that is used to compile a program installer in the Inno Setup Compiler. By default, compiled programs are generated to an "Output" directory within the ISS script directory. ISS files can be edited using the Inno Setup Compiler or any text editor. They are similar to .INI files. So, music files should ideally not be in this format. But since you have one, the best way to play it would be to convert it into a more common file. I just copied the file to a different location and renamed the extension as .wmv instead of .iss and it started playing on all players that I have. It was also recognised by iTunes which means that I could also copy it to my iPad. So just convert your file to a different format or just download the same song in a format that is useable on all devices.

Q: I have recently updated my Blackberry Bold 9700 OS from BB5 to 6. Voice calls and Internet are working fine, but the device is no longer able to send/receive SMSes. What should I do? Rajshekhar Sirimala, on email

G&G: Why don't you check with the operator first. They should be able to provide you with the message centre number. Also get your SIM card checked. If these don't help, reload the software again.
