Radhika Anand, 44, earns money by growing plants in glass jars.

It is basically a glass container in which plants grow, creating a miniature ecosystem. It’s been a hobby for close to 15 years now—a natural extension of my love for gardening. Where do you use them? Terrariums are used for decorative purposes. Closed ones can be used as tables while the open ones are smaller in size and can be kept on shelves or tables.

Terrariums are used for decorative purposes. Closed ones can be used as tables while the open ones are smaller in size and can be kept on shelves or tables.
Is it difficult to maintain them?
The plants transpire moisture through their leaves, which then condenses on the glass and flows back to the soil. This “rain effect” allows them to go for weeks without being watered.
When did you realise you could turn it into a business?
I had been gifting small pieces to friends. Slowly through word of mouth others got to know and I started charging them. I also set up a website educating people about terrariums and its maintenance.
Who was your first client?
It was in Abu Dhabi in 1997, where we had gone for a holiday. The lobby manager of the hotel where we were staying was quite impressed by my booklet of terrarium photos. He asked me to do eight pieces for the restaurants. I earned enough to buy a Turkish carpet!
How many pieces do you create every month?
I am not into mass production but I can create up to 10 pieces a day. I have a five-people team that helps me in creating them.
How much do you charge?
Depending on the size of the piece, the price could range from Rs 500 to over Rs 1 lakh.
How successful has this venture been?
Without much effort I have managed quite well. Some of my clients include Apollo Hospital, Indian Army, Oberoi Hotels, Delhi government. Small pieces are also used as corporate gifts on a regular basis. I also organise eco-awareness workshop for several Delhi schools.
Any expansion plans?
I really haven’t given serious thought to expansion. At least not yet. My order book is full for the next few months. I still look at creating terrariums as a hobby, albeit paying one.
