Year of scams

If you are the average Indian, who invests with caution and pays taxes with exemplary consistency, you'll remember 2010 for two reasons: CWG and scandals.

If you are the average Indian, who invests with caution and pays taxes with exemplary consistency, you'll remember 2010 for two reasons: the Commonwealth Games and scandals.

The latter erupted with disturbing frequency and ranged from the Rs 8,000 crore Games scam to the Rs 2,000 crore bribery-for-loan scandal, and the more recent Rs 1,76,000 crore telecom fraud. All these induced a rightful hint of heartburn.

For, even as the ordinary investor suffered when the realty and banking stocks took a plunge after the loan scam surfaced, the taxpayer saw his hard-earned money go down the blackholes of corruption. Hopefully, the new year will not see the probes into these scandals impacting the markets adversely.
