R Rajagopal, Chief Investment Officer, DBS Cholamandalam Asset Management, shares with us his investment mantra.
Past positions: Was vice-president (equity investment) at IDBI Capital Market.
Investment mantra: Be practical, think clearly and be disciplined while investing.
Best call over the past few months: To exit IT completely and to become overweight on energy and construction space.
Worst call over the past few months: Went overweight with cement in early 2007 and then exiting it by mid 2007. Also took a big call on hotel industry which has still not paid off.
Top picks right now: IOB, Gujarat NRE Coke, Elecon Engineering, AIA Engineering, NTPC, Lloyd Electric & Engineering, GAIL.
Advice to small investors: Follow systematic investment approach; participate in equity markets through the mutual fund route.
Worst mistake small investors make: Exuberance over few stocks or sectors without understanding the underlying value.
