India must develop budget hotels

There are not enough budget hotels in the country. But with Indians becoming more mobile, many companies are waking up to this business opportunity.

Your story on lesser-known holiday destinations (Value Vacations, 1 May) was informative. To encourage international and domestic tourism, India must develop budget hotels which provide good facilities too.

—Mahesh Kapasi, Delhi

There are not enough budget hotels in the country. But with Indians becoming more mobile, many companies are waking up to this business opportunity. We had done a story—Affordable Luxury —exploring the options of budget stays currently available in India. This article should be useful to all travellers looking for decent but cheap accommodation.

It is really difficult to say no to credit cards (How to say No, 1 May). It is a common perception that more cards are better, especially if they are free. So getting cards cancelled is tough, especially when the issuing company has made tempting promises to customers. That such promises are rarely kept is overlooked by most people.

—Bal Govind, Bareilly

We have highlighted the importance of credit management in many stories. Cancelling credit cards in the right way is necessary for preventing their misuse by others. Banks may also continue toting up fees for cards which though in disuse, continue to be a part of their records.

Your article on best travel sites (Value Vacations, 1 May) was amazing. But though big portals have been covered, some small sites started by young professionals were ignored. One such site is www.bestgoadeals. com. It is considered to be the best travel site for Goa. In your forthcoming issues, do cover such budding online travel sites which may have low budgets but are packed with intensive coverage and additional facilities.

—Sai Miranda, Porbandar

In the course of research for the story we explored several travel-related portals. We featured only those sites which met with certain predetermined criteria. There are several portals like the one you mentioned which have a specific focus on a particular aspect of holidaying like hotel chains, bus travel, etc. We will endeavour to include them in future stories.
