The new Sony Cybershot W690 is an intelligent little device. It has all functions you would expect to see in a 16.1MP digital camera and some you wouldn't. Let us focus on the latter.
Optical SteadyShot: It is not every day that you end up with a camera which has a gyro sensor inside. Here, the lens is in a way floating inside and trying to compensate for small shakes. But don't expect the camera to negate shake you would encounter during a boat ride or a trip on the roller-coaster.
iAuto: The Intelligent Auto function takes three images when you click the trigger and combines them-like HDR imaging-to produce a better picture. Again this works when you are trying to click pictures in low light. But be prepared to wait; the time it takes to combine and record the image is a slight put off, so don't bother with this mode if you clicking an action shot. In the sweep panorama mode of this camera, you just have to press the trigger and pan the camera from left to right to record a neat, seamless panorama.
Verdict: We could not understand why the image on the LCD screen appears blurred before it locks the image in the camera mode. But for this, we could not find many faults with the camera. There are lots of modes to play around with and the interface is not confusing. As with the new cameras, you will need a large CF card to hold the pictures, especially those shot on iAuto mode.
BAG IT OR JUNK IT? Resonably priced, but feature-heavy.
