Air India is reportedly seeking $1.5 billion in fresh equity from its shareholders, Tata Sons and Singapore Airlines, as the airline battles mounting losses and operational challenges. Air India and Air India Express reported a combined $2.33 billion loss in FY26, more than double the previous year. Business Today’s Richa Sharma explains the reasons behind Air India’s latest funding demand and the challenges weighing on its turnaround. The airline has faced disruptions to international operations, additional costs linked to airspace restrictions and a period of operational shutdowns. Richa also discusses leadership changes at the airline, including Tata Sons Chairman N. Chandrasekaran’s planned exit, and the possibility of the fresh funding being infused in tranches. Discussions with shareholders remain ongoing, with no final decision yet.
