The Election Commission asserts that Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) are tamper-proof and secure against hacking. The M3 model, currently in use, is a stand-alone, one-time programmable device, functioning like a simple calculator without internet or Bluetooth connectivity. It requires no external power source and features self-check mechanisms to reset to factory settings if tampered with. EVM results are further verified using Voter Verified Paper Audit Trails (VVPATs). As mandated by the Supreme Court, a sample tallying of over 20,000 VVPATs ensures result accuracy. Notably, all VVPAT counts so far have shown zero vote transfer errors, with discrepancies arising only from human errors, such as failing to clear mock-poll data. EVMs undergo rigorous testing, including third-party reviews and mock polling in the presence of candidates’ representatives. They are sealed with specialized security paper from the Nashik press, ensuring no unauthorized access. Additionally, stringent storage protocols are in place. EVMs are kept in secured rooms with single-door access, monitored 24/7 by candidates and election officials. With robust safeguards and transparent processes, EVMs remain a reliable tool for conducting free and fair elections in India.
