In response to the brutal rape and murder of 31-year-old trainee doctor Abhaya at RG Kar Hospital, Fortis Hospital in Delhi has taken proactive measures to ensure the safety of its female health workers. The hospital management, in collaboration with the Parivartan Cell of Delhi Police, has initiated self-defense training for its female staff. This training equips them with essential martial arts techniques such as punches, elbow strikes, blocking, eye attacks, and methods to escape from hair and hand grips. The women are also taught how to effectively use everyday items as improvised weapons for self-defense in critical situations. According to Poonam, a trainer and Delhi Police constable, the goal of the training is not to harm the attacker but to enable the women to quickly reach safety. This self-defense program is a crucial step in empowering women and enhancing their personal safety, particularly in high-risk environments like hospitals. It reflects a broader commitment to creating safer workplaces and addressing the urgent need for women's protection in the wake of tragic incidents like that of Dr. Abhaya.
