Apple's iPhone continues to set benchmarks in smartphone market

Apple iPhone 5 started it all. Five years on, the smartphone from Apple still sets most of the benchmarks.

Apple iPhone 5 started it all. Five years on, the smartphone from Apple still sets most of the benchmarks.

Design & Built
The iPhone 5 looks very similar to its predecessor, but place it next to the iPhone 4S and you will know see that Apple has stretched the display to 4 inches to accommodate another row of apps. The larger display has 18 per cent more pixels at 1136x640p resolution. With a bigger, better display, the width of the iPhone remains untouched that makes it comfortable to grip and use with one hand. The iPhone has also become much sleeker at 7.6mm and weighs lesser at 112 grams.

Work
With iOS 6, Apple has added some much-needed updates including a Do Not disturb feature, FaceTime over cellular, VIP inbox, individual signature for different email accounts, etc. The device now has full Facebook and Twitter integration. There isn't any challenge typing on the phone. However, no office suite comes pre-installed on the iPhone 5, which has also replaced Google Maps with a native map that is not of much use. The A6 chip processor is powerful and there is a noticeable difference in performance over earlier devices. The CPU and graphics performance are twice as fast as on the earlier A5 chip. Multi-tasking is still restricted to double tapping the home button to launch a row of icons consisting of apps in the stationary mode.

Apps
In 2008, Apple introduced the concept of a one-stop-shop for apps. So it is no wonder that its app store is much ahead of the competition in numbers and quality. There are many apps that are exclusive to the Apple App Store and security is not a concern as everything is rigorously checked before being put on the shelves.

Battery
The good thing about the iPhone 5 is its battery backup as it continues to last through the day with approximately two hours of calling and constant 3G connectivity. And unlike some other smartphones, it doesn't heat up.

Fun
Apple without doubt offers the best imaging experience and music output, but it has gone a step ahead. The 8MP camera on the iPhone 5 offers crisp and vibrant images. Images captured in lowlight are good and devoid of noise. Then there is the Panorama mode where the stitching is seamless. The sound output is also much better and comes with better bass. The bigger display and the better sound further makes the iPhone 5 a gamers' delight.
