The Indian mutual fund industry comprises 35 fund houses that manage funds worth Rs 4,21,907 crore (as on December 31, 2008). In a 10-part series, we look at some of the big fund houses. The first one is the HDFC Mutual Fund, which was incorporated on December 10, 1999 and now has 141 schemes.

Asset Allocation

The break-up of assets worth Rs 14,065 for equity, balanced and monthly income plans.

Gaining Ground

The AMC's profit after tax has shown a remarkable increase in 2007-8 over the previous year.

Top 5 Fund Schemes

The AUM for HDFC Cash Management-Saving Plus are worth Rs 10,738 crore.

  2. Liquid Fund - Premium: 14%
  3. Cash Mgmt - Savings: 7%
  4. Equity Fund (D): 6%
  5. Top 200 Fund (D): 4%

Only two equity schemes fall in the top five, accounting for 10% of the assets.

Top 5 Equity Holdings

Two banks comprise the largest holding for the fund house, with a combined equity worth Rs 1,446 crore.

  1. ICICI Bank Ltd: 6.11%
  2. State Bank of India: 6.10%
  3. Crompton Greaves Ltd: 3.32%
  4. BPCL: 3.19%
  5. Reliance Industries: 3.13%

The holdings are based on the total equity value and not the total AUM.

Fund House Style

The equity funds of HDFC have been performing better since Prashant Jain came in after the fund house acquired the Zurich Mutual Fund in 2003. Jain prefers a concentrated approach, rather than a diffused strategy, in constructing a portfolio.
