Making a fortune

Making a fortune

The search for a reliable astrologer led Hemang Arun Pandeet, 32, to start GaneshaSpeaks, an astro consulting Website. Forecasting fortunes has proved fortuitous for the Ahmedabad-based engineer.

Hemang Arun Pandeet
What led you to start GaneshaSpeaks?
I was working as the head of product development with Hutch in Ahmedabad, when I accompanied a friend for an astrological consultation. I found the astrologer highly unprofessional and thought of starting a branded astrology service. GaneshaSpeaks was born in 2000.

Did you go for any specialised training?
I studied engineering and did not take any training in astrology.

What are the charges for your services?
We provide predictions and horoscopes for all important aspects of life such as career, business, finance, love & marriage, property, etc. Astro consultations for these are priced between $5 and $200 (Rs 250-10,000).

Did you have problems in hiring staff?
We did face some challenges while recruiting people from different schools of astrology as they came with their own ideas about interpreting kundlis. We now have 130 employees in all.

What was your initial investment?
A friend acted as my angel investor and funded Rs 10 lakh for my start-up.

How has the response been so far?
We get about 20,000 visitors on our Website every day. This translates to almost 6,000 enquiries in a month.

How did you scale up the business? What are your future plans?
We tied up with Internet portals, telecom operators such as Idea and Tata Indicom, and TV channels like Sony and Star TV. We are planning to introduce services like personalised stock market forecasts and are looking for venture capitalists.
