Convenience comes for a price. While the prices of many food grains and cereals have doubled in the past two decades, those of baby food have increased nearly four times. But most young parents don’t mind paying more for this “essential” item.
Then: The retail price of a 1 kg pack of baby food was Rs 60 in 1990
Now: A 1 kg pack now sells for Rs 220, a 266% rise in 18 years
Then: If the price of baby food keeps rising at the same rate, a 1 kg pack may cost Rs 805 in 2026
The cold comfort is that the steep rise in the prices of baby food affects a small section of the population—young, urban families with infants. The finances of this segment are not as vulnerable to inflationary pressures as those of retirees and middle-aged workers.
