While prices of most services shot up, telecom services have become cheaper. Little wonder then that you no longer make STD calls with one eye on the clock.

Then, now and then

This is one price change that has brought a smile on the face of millions of customers. While prices of most services shot up, telecom services have become cheaper. Little wonder then that you no longer make STD calls with one eye on the clock.

Then: A local call from a cell phone cost Rs 32 a minute in 1995 (Rs 16 outgoing and Rs 16 incoming)

Now: While incoming calls are free, an outgoing mobile call now costs about Re 1, a drop of almost 95% in 12 years

Then: If telecom rates keep climbing down at the same rate, a local call may cost only 5 paise in 2019

It seems incredible but in another 10 years local calls from your mobile phone may not cost 5 paise but be completely free. But as the mobile becomes an all-in-one gadget, you will pay for services like video games, music, GPS, etc. So lower tarrifs may not translate into lower phone bills after all.
